LTH pilots lockers for e-bike battery storage

Lithium-ion-battery storage.

Three sets of lockers will be put in place in September for storing and charging e-bike batteries. The lockers will be located outside the E Building (ready to use), A Building and Kemicentrum and can be used by staff and students.

The three sets of lockers now being put in place on the LTH campus in a collaboration between LU Estates, LTH and Akademiska Hus will be evaluated at the end of the autumn. A decision will subsequently be taken on whether other similar lockers will be installed. This is one of several solutions being tested in response to the ban on bringing e-bike batteries into our premises. In addition to these battery lockers, LTH has applied to convert some fireproof rooms for lithium-ion batteries. Other organisational units have introduced or in the process of introducing storage solutions for e-bike batteries, e.g. at Kvarteret Paradis and MAX IV.

To use one of the battery lockers at LTH, you unlock and lock a compartment using the same LU card. If you need to charge your battery, you can do this free of charge. The lockers are also designed so that a thermostat ensures the temperature does not dip too low when charging during the winter. If a problem arises concerning the battery lockers, you report this using the Akademiska Hus app “Mitt campus”.

The pilot scheme for the new e-bike battery lockers is part of a larger project to draw up an action plan for sustainable mobility at Lund University. Lund University is undertaking this at the same time as many other organisations and companies in Lund as part of the Vinnova-funded collaboration project CoAction, with the aim that Lund will be climate-neutral by 2030 and, among other things, further raise its profile as a bike-friendly city.
