The RISE awards stands for Real Impact on Society and the Environment. Over the past five years, the University has had winners in four editions of the competition.
Thirty member universities compete and the finalists are selected in a first stage at a local competition at the home university. Their submitted pitches are then sent on to the international final.
Time for students to apply for the next competition
It is soon time for the next competition. Do you know of a student-driven project that would be suitable? Give them a tip to apply to the next edition of the RISE Awards, the application deadline is 7 April.

Below are LU’s previous winners, who were each awarded USD 2,000 for their projects:
2020 – Solar4Schools (Wenjing Yang)
Development of solar energy solutions for schools in Kenya, which provide access to lighting, mobile phone charging and an extra income source for the schools.
2021 – SunFeeds (Iris Bjerkén & Elsa Sjödahl)
Creation of a new form of nutritious meal replacement for children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM), which improves recovery times and cost efficiency.
2023 – Nepri (Erik Karlsson)
Use of microfluidic technology and AI for the early detection of plant diseases, which prevents crop losses and enables sustainable farming. After the win, Nepri succeeded in obtaining SEK 40 million in funding and is now part of a research consortium at LTH, LU and SLU. Erik is now employed as a doctoral student at LTH, where he is continuing to work on Nepri.
2024 – Solstice (Malin Eriksson, Martin Arvidsson & Hampus Hammarbäck)
Development of an innovative solar panel that enables 89% cheaper storage of solar and wind power through thermal storage in sand. After RISE, the emphasis for Solstice has been on product development, with a particular focus on research and the acquisition of the right components for the first small-scale product. There is also an ongoing pilot project in cooperation with Växjö Energi.
