Jan Astermark, Professor of Clinical Coagulation Medicine
"YOU CREATE AN EXTENSIVE AND VERY VALUABLE NETWORK"
Jan Astermark has been engaged in teaching medical professionals for over 20 years. He also works at Skåne University Hospital, where he is a consultant and responsible for the Clinical Coagulation research unit in Malmö. On the question of how commissioned education has enriched him, the answer centres on interaction.
Jan Astermark’s research focuses on haemophilia and how treatment can be optimised for haemophilia patients. Having the opportunity via commissioned education to pass on the latest research findings to other regions of the world is something he finds very rewarding.
– It gives something back. I get the opportunity to expand my outlook in relation to all that’s happening in the world and how healthcare is developing in other places with their prevailing advantages and problems, says Jan Astermark.
There is considerable variation in how the disease is treated in different countries. In many cases, the resources that hospitals have at their disposal are very limited.
– This places demands on us as lecturers, because you must set the bar where you can convey knowledge that is applicable locally and at all levels. At the same time, it provides an interesting spectrum when you can discuss the management of different patients and what you can do according to the different preconditions that you have. It adds a further dimension to the training.
In addition to holding international courses in Malmö with participants from all regions of the world, Jan Astermark has also been out in Europe and Asia to give courses on haemophilia for physicians and nurses. All told, the courses have given Jan Astermark an extensive contact network that he can converse and interact with in different situations.
– It’s one of many positive things about being engaged in commissioned education and I set a high value on it. And the participants certainly do, too.
